Shomben Yokocho, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan.

Squashed up against the train tracks lie 4-blocks of narrow, red lantern-lit alleyways known as Shomben Yokocho. The name translates as "piss alley".

As you can see in this photo, it consists mainly of small yakitori restaurants and cramped bars.

I like the cramped feel of those alleyways. Even such a small area of space is so lively

it might be small, narrow and cramped, but it has a great sense of place. usually places like this are very friendly despite their reputation

I like streets in Japan. They look so different from streets here. Even though there are a load more people, they seem more open somehow... Does that make any sense?

Personally I think this place is more claustrophobic than open ;-)
The streets in places like Ginza feel quite open though.
